The use of cranes to lift and move heavy objects is a crucial and common activity in many industries in Singapore today. It is therefore important that cranes are properly maintained, safely deployed and operated, and lifting activities are well-planned and well-managed to minimise the risks of accidents.
SS 497:2011 is a revision of SS 497: 2002 which covered only overhead travelling cranes. The scope of this standard has been expanded to include powered overhead travelling cranes, gantry cranes, jib cranes and monorails hoists. It specifies the basic requirements of cranes and lays down the responsibilities of the various parties involved.
SS 559:2010 provides recommendations for the safe installation and use of tower cranes, including self-erecting tower cranes. It covers the selection of tower cranes, planning of installation, erection, extension, inspection, maintenance, operation, and dismantling, as well as safety measures to be taken during the execution of all the above functions.
SS 497 and SS 559 will complement the ACOPs and provide more information and guidelines to the workers. The workshop will be an awareness/refresher session on standards and requirements related to safe use of cranes for supervisors, safety officers and workers working in sectors related to cranes.
